The vote is on, and by tonight, we’ll know who’s taking the mayoral seat. Independent Councillor Nathan Zamprogno is the only one to confirm he’s in the race. Meanwhile, the Hawkesbury Liberals, including former Mayor, Sarah McMahon, have stayed silent on their intentions.
It’s unknown whether Mary Lyons-Buckett, who brought home a very strong election result will also run.
Rumors are swirling about backroom deals and mounting pressure on a number of Councillors to secure their vote, especially Councillor Les Sheather. Some speculate he could make a run for mayor himself, potentially with a Liberal deputy in tow. Could the Liberals back that move? It seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened in politics.
If the contest narrows to McMahon vs. Zamprogno, Sheather may well hold the Council’s fate in his hands. With the vote expected to be razor-close, every single count will matter.
We’ll first hear from the General Manager, who will announce the nominations once the meeting opens at 6:30 PM. By 7:30 PM, Hawkesbury will have its new Mayor.
Stay tuned for the outcome!
